Road Safety

Polka Education has developed two exciting interactive Road Safety productions, which have toured annually to Merton’s primary schools since 2007, commissioned by Merton Council.  They are available to be booked by local authorities across London.

Around the Corner

Year 2 pupils meet the puppet character, Spike, a six year old boy on his way to school with his Dad.  Spike’s new friends, the audience, help to build the route, an over sized floor puzzle, with road markings and props to show different crossings or features on their journey. The class help Spike decide where is safe to cross and participate as motorists, presenting various hazards for Spike and his Dad on their journey to school.

What will the performance cover?

  • the Green Cross Code;
  • how to use safer crossing places, including pelican, zebra and school crossings;
  • awareness of potential hazards as a pedestrian;
  • sustainable travel and the effects of cars on climate change;
  • healthy living through promotion of the initiative Walk on Wednesday.

'The puppets and the use of colourful resources made it interesting and sustained the pupils’ interest’

Year 2 teacher, Cranmer Primary School

Performance duration: 50mins

Minimum booking: one week of performances

Arrive Alive

This interactive workshop has been designed for Year 6 pupils, in preparation for their transition to secondary school.   The workshop is led by two actors, who play the characters of Luke Bothways and Hi-Visability, and takes the form of a game show.  Each class form teams and participate in question and answer rounds, role play and observation based activities. During the session the pupils consider a variety of issues relating to road safety practice including:

What will the performance cover?

  • how to find safe places to cross the road;
  • distractions that could hinder safe road crossing;
  • the effects of peer pressure when making safe choices in road safety;
  • the risks and hazards involved when crossing the road and how these can be minimised.

 'It was a stimulating workshop and the pupils were interested and engaged throughout the session.’

Year 6 teacher, Abbotsbury Primary School, Morden

Duration: 60mins
