Here at Polka we think it is never too young to start attending the theatre! So our new show, Lullaby, is specifically aimed at expectant mums, their bumps and new babies. Polka are working with singer-performer Natalie Raybould to create an intimate, comforting first experience of theatre based around the natural sounds of lullabies. Over the next few weeks, Natalie will be giving us an insight into the fascinating creation process…
This is the view I have had for the past three weeks. I have been structuring the story and composing the music for Lullaby in my music room, with tea, tea, and maybe the odd celebratory biscuit. My piano isn’t very chatty, so thank goodness for telephones: I have had many telephone meetings with our director Jo , with me singing and playing to her a new idea I’ve just had: ” this will go like this, then… This bit is the ‘cello part entering… Then we all sing this bit together…!”
I feel really lucky to have looked at this view for so long: to be able to get the chance to create a new work for babies. Jo had an inspirational idea last year: that sung performance for babies can be calm, elegant and as truly beautiful for the parents and carers as for the babies – and I am working as hard as I can to live up to that vision. Lullaby will be in a soft tented environment; you’ll be invited inside with a smile and a tune. We will play together, sing together, listen together, and find our own hint of magic in the middle of a rainy Wednesday.
Come and join us! I can’t wait to meet you, after hanging out with Mr. P. Forte for weeks on end…!
